Building on the fact fluency module from last year this session will cover approaches to multi-step word problems, focusing specifically on multiplication.
Content Topics
- What are word problems strategies that work?
- Strategies and steps to help teachers develop their own rigorous and engaging multi-step word problem instruction (includes videos).
Knowledge
- Become more familiar with conceptual understandings of multiplication, varied instructional strategies, and literacy strategies for math word problems.
- Develop lesson plans that incorporate varied instruction and differentiation that meet the needs of your elementary school students for fact fluency
- Provide opportunities for students to be reflective about multiplication concepts and word problems
- Organize and manage a classroom that works to support elementary school students tackle tough math concepts
- In order to successfully “teach” students you need an approach that is differentiated and takes into account all of the variables that are working for and against all students. The “one size fits all” of education is antiquated and will not be as effective.
- Understand why “growth’ theory of brain development and not the “fixed” theory will help instruction support all students.
- Understand why conceptual understanding is important to student learning and how we can deprioritize operational fluency to help students improve their learning of concepts.
