Course: Evidence-based Discussion and Writing
Description
In a strong literacy classroom, students have ample time to share their thoughts about their reading through conversation and writing. Student voices dominate the conversation and they are expected to defend their opinions with evidence from the text. Likewise, students are regularly expected to “write from sources” by responding to text‐dependent prompts and defending their written arguments or ideas with textual evidence. It is important for students to cite evidence in both discussions and writing because it demonstrates their ability to back up their thoughts with proof. It also eliminates the possibility that a student will answer a question with a guess. When evidence is required, students have to go back into the text, interpret important details, and use those details to back up their arguments.
